By Peter Ruicci THE SAULT STAR A broken foot has done more than just alter Marnie Holley’s gait. It’s also changed the 31-year-old’s plans to turn professional over the winter. Instead, Sault Ste. Marie’s renowned fitness competitor anticipates joining the professional ranks next July. En route to winning the Euro Elite Tour Championship Nov. 17 in Marseille, France, Holley broke a bone on the side of her left foot during her morning fitness routine. She said she heard a “crack,” after landing one of her jumps, but managed to complete the final 30 seconds of a 90-second routine. Holley was taken to hospital, the break was diagnosed and she returned in time for the evening show wearing a cast. Even though judging was done in the morning, Holley — taking part in her final amateur event — said she was told she’d need to return to the site of the competition in order to avoid being disqualified. “It’s definitely bittersweet,” said Holley, who finished fourth in the Tall Category in September at the International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) Women’s World Fitness Championships in Santa Susanna, Spain. “It was great to go out with a win. I was excited, but I certainly didn’t want to wind up with a broken foot.” Holley, who qualified to turn pro by winning both the Tall Category and the overall championship at the Canadian Bodybuilding Federation (CBBF) National Fitness and Figure Championships, June 30 in Edmonton, admitted it could have been worse.“It could have been my ankle,” she said. “If anything, it makes me more creative with my training.” Holley said she’ll now register as a professional before the Dec. 14 deadline and likely make her pro debut in Texas at the Europa Supershow in July.
